Homegrown, Huron County, high school students learned about healthcare at the Discovery Healthcare Camp. In the summer of 2023, Gateway Centre of Excellence in Rural Health (CERH) in collaboration with Huron Health System (HSS), and the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry (Schulich) ran a weeklong summer camp in July for high school students to learn about practical skills and pathways to healthcare. This camp took place at Camp Klahanie just outside of Goderich.
The fun and learning never ended with a wide range of activities and workshops featuring local healthcare professionals including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, speech language pathologists and more. Casting, suturing, injections, medical trivia and volleyball all went together as activities featured at this camp. Not to be forgotten was a tour of the local Goderich Hospital where behind-the-scenes operations were presented to the students. Students were able to get an insight into what a rural hospital pharmacy, lab and medical screening look like. Other fun events included a disaster day in which a dramatic story including a propellor accident, and shark bite had students learning how to triage and treat injuries.
This camp featured partnerships coming together from Schulich, HHS and Gateway CERH. Second-year and third year medical students from Schulich were camp leaders and organized the activities. Ally Hulley, a local nurse, was recruited by Gateway CERH to co-ordinate with the local hospital, AMGH and Schulich, the camp activities and guest speakers. One of the main reasons for this partnership between HHS, Schulich and Gateway CERH is the shared goal to inspire high school students from rural areas to be interested in healthcare and return to their rural areas to work in rural healthcare once they complete their education. The Gateway CERH team was pleased to be working with everyone to make this camp successful.
