Day 9 of 12 Days of Farm Safety: Tips for Chemical Safety

Farming often involves the use of agricultural chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, and veterinary treatments. These substances play a crucial role in maintaining productive farms but can pose serious risks if not handled properly. Prioritizing safety when working with chemicals not only protects you but also safeguards your family, animals, and the environment.

Why Chemical Safety Matters:

Exposure to agricultural chemicals can cause immediate and long-term health effects; these range from skin irritation and respiratory issues to more severe conditions like poisoning, burns, or chronic illnesses such as cancer. Proper handling and precautions minimize risks and ensure your health and safety.

Four Most Common Agrichemicals:

  1. Insecticides: Are used to target insects (e.g., pyrethroids, organophosphates)

  2. Herbicides: These are used to control unwanted weeds (e.g., glyphosate and atrazine)

  3. Fungicides: Are used to prevent or control fungal diseases (e.g., azoxystrobin and chlorothalonil)

  4. Rodenticides: These are used to manage rodent populations and infestations

Nine Key Practices for Safe Chemical Handling

  1. Always read the labels.

  2. Wear gloves, masks, and goggles.

  3. Store chemicals securely in their original labeled containers.

  4. Mix chemicals in well-ventilated areas.

  5. Never reuse older containers.

  6. Keep chemicals out of reach of kids and animals.

  7. Follow the proper disposal guidelines.

  8. Wash your hands after handling chemicals.

  9. Have emergency contact information at your disposal.

Be Prepared for Emergencies:

Accidents can happen even with the best precautions. Always keep emergency contacts handy and know the symptoms of chemical exposure, such as:

  • Dizziness, headaches, or nausea.

  • Skin irritation or rashes.

  • Respiratory difficulties.

If you are exposed to chemicals or experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

Your Role in Farm Safety:

Safe chemical handling requires vigilance and consistency. By following these guidelines, you protect yourself, your farm, and the environment while maintaining efficiency and productivity.
