Announcing: BONUS Lecture on Immigrant Health Care  

Gateway Centre of Excellence in Rural Health (CERH), working with the Huron County Immigration Partnership, is excited to announce an exciting BONUS lecture on Thursday, October 17th, 2024, from 12 – 1 PM. This lecture will feature co-presenters, Dr. Saleema Allana and Dr. Jennifer Dean discussing “Immigrant Health Care”. 


Newcomers to Canada experience many unique challenges with promoting their own health and well-being coming to Canada. Adding to that, rural and remote regions further transform that experience. This online webinar serves to illuminate both the present and look positively towards to future of immigrant healthcare in Canada.

The two presenters for the lecture are academics from Western University and the University of Waterloo. Dr. Saleema Allana is an Assistant Professor at the Western University. Her program of research explores disparities in immigrants' health and well-being, including cardiovascular health, brain health and aging. More of her published work can be found on Western University’s website

 

Dr Jennifer Dean is an Associate Professor in the School of Planning at the University of Waterloo. She is a social scientist and health geographer by training and a registered Planner with the Canadian Institute of Planners (link). Her research program explores how local environments shape population health and well-being. More of her work and activities can be found on the University of Waterloo’s website


Gateway CERH had previously explored ideas of migrant healthcare in Season 4, Episode 10, looking at “A Snapshot of Early Settlement Experience”



To learn more about migration, the Huron County Immigration Partnership is a wealth of local resources for newcomers and long-time residents of Huron County to learn more about their neighbours.
